May 8, 2017 : the Jury of the 15th Young Reporters for the Environmental Contest announced the results

The jury granted the proximity prize to the 15-18 years old from Hassan II high school in Rabat, Rabat Salé Kénitra academy of education, for a written report on the Oulja potters’ that shows that their conversion to environmental practices may lead to stop the slow decline of an ancestral activity.

Near, in Zénata, the 15-18 years old YRE students from Khadija Al Mouaminine de Sidi Bernoussi High School (Casablanca-Settat academy) have described this ecological city through the eyes of a stork that is flying over the area. They have highlighted also that the urbanistic plans have integrated sustainable development, especially the sustainable mobility. They have been rewarded the Awareness Prize.

In Tanger, the famous writers Bowles, Mohammed Choukri or Jean Genet would certainly have appreciated the article on well know Haffa Coffee where they have their habits to go there. Realized by El Hassan Middle School students, they article recommend in the article, the renovation of this heritage, today at risk. They have been granted the contrast prize for the age category 11-14 years old.

Much more poetic is certainly the article of Abdelkarim El Khattabi high school of Tinghir (Daraa Tafilalet Academy). They investigated on the threats on the roses of the Dades Valley, where ancestral tradition of the production of the essence oil of roses is endangered by pollution and overexploitation. The jury awarded their work by the Prize of the national jury for the 19-21 years old have been given to for their written report.

La tradition de la fauconnerie n’est pas moins ancienne. Elle fait la fierté des Doukkalas et l’objet du travail d’enquête des JRE du Lycée Ihssane 3 d’El Jadida. Ceux-ci ont fait témoigner les dresseurs sur la nécessité de préserver par la transmission aux jeunes cet art si élégant qu’est la chasse au faucon, et reçu pour cela le prix Entre générations pour les 15-18 ans.

The tradition of falconry is nonetheless old. It makes the pride of the Doukkalas and the subject of work of El Ihssane 3 from El Jadida students. They questioned trainers and resulted on the importance of transmitting this cultural heritage to younger generations. They have been rewarded the Inter-generation Prize 15-18 years old.

The last article awarded with the innovation prize for the age category 19-21 years is from Cherif Idrissi High school in Oujda for their written report on the valorization of the waste of olive pomace as fuel, allowing the reduction of the regional ecological footprint and the pressure on the forest.

The prize of winning photographs have been discerned to six schools from the different academies of education, for illustrations such as the cedar of Ben Smim of the middle atlas, the natural bridge of Imin Ifri near Demnate, the Doukkalas stones structures: tazotas, the Huceima souk, and the old doors and scents of Agadir.

Three written articles (Tanger, Tinghir and El Jadida) and two photographs (Agadir and Al Hoceima) have been recognized by the international jury.

The winners and their supervisors will receive their prizes as well as tablets that will be distributed on the occasion of provincial and regional ceremonies.

« Young Reporters for the Environment” Program

Young reporters for the environment (YRE) (www.jre.ma) is a program created by the Foundation for environmental education (FEE) from which 34 countries are enrolled. In Morocco the program has been launched by the Foundation Mohammed VI pour la Protection de l’Environnement in 2002 (www.fm6e.org). More than 22 000 middle and high school students between 11 and 21 year old participate. 186 written articles are awarded at national level and 24 at international contest. The YRE students have been supervised by 8000 teachers.
